Dayton Kappa League visits The Ohio State University
On November 16th, the Dayton Alumni KAPPA Leaguers, under the direction of Brother Fred Fields, were hosted on the campus of Ohio State University by the Zeta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Once the Kappa arrived on OSU’s yard, they were greeted by Brother XX. Then they were escorted to a class room to begin the meet and greet. During initial phase of the visit, the KAPPA Leaguers were able to engage the Brothers of Zeta Chapter about classes, college life, their majors, paths to college, differences in high school life vs. college life and they were shown videos of unique traits of life at Ohio State University.
The next phase of the visit was a very in-depth tour of the OSU stadiums most cherished spaces. We began in the Yassenoff Recruit Center, which is filled with pictures of current and former Buckeye greats. Then we were off to the playing field where the Kappa leaguers were allowed to walk “the Horseshoe” field. This seemed to be a great highlight to the leaguers. From there we were shown to one of the nation’s largest collegiate press boxes. This provided an added vantage point to viewing the stadium.
Upon leaving the Ohio Stadium, we were then taken an Engineering building. There the group was shown classrooms of various sizes, the smaller 30 seat rooms to the lecture halls of 300+ seats. They were also explained the differences in approach to understanding how to achieve in the multiple classroom settings. Being told that in the larger classes, professor office visits and assistant professor visits are very key to excelling and understanding a particular subject. Also they were told that with the amount of class you take, you must learn to utilize your free time wisely. Choosing your classes and the timeframes is also very important. The most important thing they learned on the expansive walk between buildings is that mom and dad are not here to wake you and ensure that you study, eat wash clothes, exercise, go to the library, turn in homework and monitor social time. This is something that you must be prepared to engage on your own and draw from your own self-discipline to be effective in college life and achieve required grades for graduation.
The tour continued from the Engineering building to the Library. The Kappa Leaguers were shown the expansive Library with its multiple floors and study areas. From there the tour continued to the recreation center. Showing them all uniquely different activities ongoing at one time, from weight lifting, to intramural basketball games, swimming, golf, racquetball, other various workout activities. During the rec center visit there was time slotted to allow for 40 minutes of free time on a basketball court.
